Dear Fellow Colleague: Why in the world would anyone want to sit in a room full of competitors and find ways to make their business better? Twelve years ago, I asked myself this question when considering joining the Underground Contractors Association of Illinois. Today, I am glad that I made the decision to join the association. Early on, I learned it is easy to leave your competitive nature at the door and realize the benefits to business and family that membership brings. It may not be apparent to a non-member, but as a part of a group of contractors conducting the same business, you are no longer alone confronting the myriad problems a contractor faces. The largest membership benefit is the relationships made in the association. Yes, you receive benefits and resources, but you cannot put a price tag on the relationships you form. After meeting other members, you will quickly learn that there is no business problem that someone else has not experienced. Your problems are answered casually and in understandable language during a meeting or telephone conversation. Another value of additional members is the influence UCA has in the halls of the municipalities, sanitary districts, the Illinois Senate, House of Representatives, and even Washington, D.C. Dues are minimal when compared with benefits. Coming from a small family business, I can guarantee two things: you will benefit from UCA, and UCA will benefit from your active involvement. Now is the time for you to become a part of the group that can solve problems and improve our industry. -Tim J. Scully
